The park is named in honor of Gustaf Fredrik Stjernvall, born in 1767, who was a major and governor of the Uusimaa and Häme provinces. He worked tirelessly to ensure that the Government Council (the Senate) and the new central offices were moved from Turku to Helsinki in 1812, when it became the new capital. Fredrik Stjernvall Park is seamlessly connected to Meripuisto.
Fredrik Stjernvall Park is an old park featuring a gravel-covered seating area next to Merikatu Street. The southern slope of the park descends toward Meripuisto. The park has large trees, including a magnificent oak, and mature shrubs. At the request of residents, a padel tennis court was added to the park. The seating area includes new benches and seating groups. Wide perennial borders, blooming from lilac to purple shades, adorn the edges of the seating areas. The park’s impressive oak is illuminated from below, and the old lilac plantings have been supplemented with new ones.
The slope of the park facing south has been shaped into a gentle grassy area while preserving its rocky outcrops. Granite seating has been placed on the slope. The boat winter storage area, screened with reed plantings, serves as a parking area in the summer. A recycling point for Eira residents has also been built here, and Merikatu can be reached via metal stairs.
